Vegan, Vegetarian or Plant-based?
Surely #wholefood#plantbased must have been the most popular tags of 2018? But what is the difference between these three diets?
Vegans do not eat animal-based products including meat, dairy, eggs, or animal-derived ingredients, like honey. This lifestyle extends outside the kitchen and includes abstaining from using ANY animal byproducts (leather, silk, wool, gelatin, beeswax, lanolin) to make everyday items from clothing, shoes, accessories, shampoo, makeup & skincare.
Veganism is a philosophy deeply rooted in the protection of animal rights.
Vegetarians choose to eliminate all meat from their diet (chicken, beef, lamb, fish), often for ethical reasons. A few variations of this diet include: “lacto-vegetarian” – adding dairy back into the mix, “ovo-vegetarian” – adding eggs back into the mix, and “pescatarian” – adding fish back into the mix.
Plant-Based eliminate all animal products from their diet including meat, fish, dairy, eggs, gelatin, and other animal byproducts, and tend to avoid processed foods (Vegans can eat less-than-healthful foods i.e. white flour, and refined sugar). Their diet consists primarily of whole, plant foods including fruit, vegetables, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds.
